In their search for answers to questions about death, Japanese boys learn something about life and ways of living through a beautiful, revealing vision. “Kiyama,” “Koabi,” and “Yamashita” are three friends in the sixth grade. They want to know what happens when a person dies: at that precise instant of absence. They begin observing an elderly recluse who lives near their school, the closest candidate for death they know. But the old man, who is frail, solitary, physically alive, and rarely engaged in the art of living, catches them in the very act.
