No one heard the stifled voice inside me; I alone heard it, I alone felt the ache, and I alone left the salon, telling my aunt: 'I will see you in the village over the weekend.' After they had gone, I returned with a head that felt massive, broken, and stuffed with a throbbing headache. I wished a passerby would kick that head with his foot, sending it rolling in front of the building's entrance, before I could go up to my room and fling my carcass onto the sofa.
