Resume
This story takes us to the time of the First World War, with the tale of the Armenian boy Mehran, who arrives in Aleppo in the Levant after a journey of forced displacement from his hometown in Mardin, Turkey, then the Ottoman Empire, through stations of misery in which he loses his family. Mehran finds himself in an orphanage in Aleppo, where a new life awaits him as he tries to adapt by practicing his favorite hobby: moving leather puppets. Through shadow‑puppet theatre and its delightful shows, he entertains his companions in the orphanage and makes them laugh. Mehran meets the Armenian orphan girl Kohar and promises to bring back the smile she lost during her displacement from her homeland, but the circumstances of war soon separate them. This time, Mehran’s refuge points him toward Jerusalem, in the final years of the Ottoman Empire. Mehran’s story, The Puppeteer, is the story of a ninety‑year‑old grandfather telling his granddaughter forgotten chapters from his tumultuous life. A story of hope and life’s victory for the Armenian people.
