The Neighborhood's Bicycle Initiative, launched by the Women's Programs Library in Deir Al-Balah in central Gaza, carried out activities starting on Saturday, April 11, 2020. The idea of the "Bicycle for a Better Life" initiative emerged in the context of the global and Palestinian situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The circumstances resulted in libraries, which were expected to be filled with activities and children during the National Reading Week in April, being unable to operate as usual. The idea initially started when the librarian announced through the library's Facebook page the availability of books and the opening of a borrowing process. It then evolved into the idea of delivering the books, and that's when the bicycles came into play. Requests for borrowing books were received through the library's page, and the librarian started preparing the books for distribution. After a week of lending, the books were collected, sanitized, and then redistributed. The idea expanded to include the inclusion of stationery in the borrowed book kits for interactive activities with the stories.
During the month of May, the Community Libraries Network, in collaboration with Al-Nakheel teams, completed activities and events for The Neighborhood's Bicycle Initiative in Beit Hanoun, Jabalia, Al-Shati refugee camp, Deir Al-Balah camp, and Sultan neighborhood in Rafah. The initiative targeted children who frequent the community libraries in these areas and had previously requested books and stories available in these libraries through their respective Facebook pages participating in the initiative.
