One of the childhood stories lived by the late Palestinian writer Jabra Ibrahim Jabra in Bethlehem in the 1930s, taken from his memoir, “The First Well.” In this story, the child’s mother prepares “haytaliyya” and leaves it to cool so the family can eat it in the evening after his father returns from work. The delicious white dish، and children’s impulsiveness، tempt Jabra the child to invite his neighborhood friends into the house to prove to them that the dish really exists, so they can see it with their own eyes; then what happens is something no one expected.
